Mare Management

Mountain View Stud caters for both wet and dry mares. Our dry mares run in large paddocks on a separate farm where they enjoy rich pastures. These mares are maintained apart from the wet mares and are bred in a separate facility to ensure safe management of all mares.

Our wet mares are kept in groups of no more than 8 grazing in lush paddocks and handled safely in large yards. The mares and foals are supplementary fed as required to ensure optimal body condition with a regular vaccination and worming program in place.

In addition, Mountain View Stud has a farrier in regular attendance to maintain the mares and foals all important hoof care.

Foaling

Mountain View Stud staff have over 30 years foaling down experience which is supported by foaling alarms and cameras in our foaling down yards. Mares in the foaling and pre-foaling paddocks are regularly monitored to ensure safe delivery. A strict management program is initiated with all new foals as we believe that the first few weeks of a foal’s life is critical to its general health and wellbeing.

Rearing Foals

At Mountain View Stud all foals at foot are monitored daily to track their general health. Foals are wormed at 6 weeks and vaccinated at 12 weeks with regular feet trimming provided as required.

Weaning

Weaning normally occurs around late April, early May and weanlings are initially placed with an older quiet mare to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Mountain View Stud conduct easy lead programs with foals from a very early age and this ensures that they are well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Yearlings

As the yearlings grow we feed them according to body weight and monitor regularly to ensure this is maintained. Feet trimming is conducted every 6-8 weeks and a worming every 6 weeks.
